AUSTRALIAN MONEY

Whenever a vessel arrives in Auckland from Australia a surprising amount of Australian money is collected On the day by some shops, hotels and restaurants. Until the credit restrictions were enforced it was the general practice for such money to be paid into the banks, but an unofficial money exchange has now developed whereby intending visitors to Australia obtain the currency of that country. One restaurant owner states that even on days when there is no vessel from Australia in Auckland, he averages among his takings from 25s to 30s in Australian coins, all of which is reserved for friends or customers proposing to visit Australia.
