VISITORS' FUNDS

UNEXPENDED BALANCES REGULATIONS APPLIED The restrictions against the transfer of money from the Dominion have been applied in respect of balances held by overseas visitors at the conclusion of their stay in the country, says the Auckland Herald. The experience of an Englishman and his wife from India illustrates how rigidly the regulations are being applied. The wife arrived on holiday nine months ago and stayed with a sister in Auckland. She brought with her a sum of money for her needs. This sum was replenished last Christmas when her husband joined her on furlough. At the conclusion of their holiday a week or so ago they sought to transfer back to India an unexpended part of their funds brought here for expenses. To their amazement and indignation, however, they ■) were given a permit to transfer back I £2O only of the surplus, and so they were compelled to leave the money in the Dominion when they departed. Another instance was that of an elderly man who left England with £IOOO to slay with members of his family. His idea in bringing such a largo sum was to use it here in case he elected to stay. But after a visit of a few months he decided to return, but he was refused permission to transfer back the whole of the balance of his funds, amounting to about £BOO, and allowed a portion only.
