KAWAKAWA The March meeting of the Kawakawa Institute garden circle was held on March 7 at the home ol Mrs. M. W. Halliwell. The attendance was Rood and Mrs. N. C. Hughes presided. "How to Make Pot Pourri" was the interesting -reading given by the hostess. "Mrs. G. L. Fraser was winner ol' the social competition. The circle welcomed throe visitors Misses Biddies. Hopley and Luee to the meeting. Competitions resulted as follow Decorated Bowl: Mrs. G. Hughes, 1; Mrs. N. Branson, 2; Mrs. C. Cowan, 3 Vase of Bulbs: Mrs. N. Branson, 1; Mrs. C. Hughes, 2; Mrs. C. Rudland, 2; Mrs. A. Fairlie, 3. BARTLETTS At the annual meeting of the Bartletfs Institute held on March 8, Mrs. French who presided over an excellent attendance, welcomed a visitor, Mrs. Mulligan. The committee for the ensuing year was elected as follows:—Mrs. French, president Mrs. breingan, secretary and treasurer, and Mrs. K. Muir, Mrs. F. Fouhy and Mrs. C. W. Tomlinson. The points competition for a knitted hot water bag cover was won by Mrs. French, with Mrs. Breingan second and Mrs. Fouhy third. The points competition for the last six months was won by Mrs. M. Breingan, who was presented with a small silver cup. Mrs. Fouhy was second. An interesting demonstration, of tapestry work was given by Mrs. Breingan, who was given a hearty vote of thanks. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames F. Mcllroy, E. Smith, and C. W. Tomlinson. TTJAI The Tuai Women's Institute held its annual meeting on March 8, Mrs. Duncan presiding over 25 members and six visitors. Two new members were welcomed. The balance sheet, was adopted. The secretary read a report on the year's activities. Bouquets and small gifts were presented to the retiring president and secretary. Institute spoons were presented to successful members for competitions for the past year. Mirs. Dunstart welcomed' the new president, Mrs. Ebon. A sit-down ■ upper was partaken of. it being the institute's birthday. Eight candles were lit by the youngest member, Mrs. Millar, and blown out by the oldest .reirvber, Mrs. Bumstead. Hearty birthday greetings were extended by Mrs. C. Dawson, of the Waikino Women's Institute. A competition was won by Mrs. Munro. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames McLeod, Philpot, Millar and T. Dawson. WAIMATA VALLEY The monthly meeting of the Waimata Valley Institute was held on March 2. The president, Mrs. J. L. Graham, presided. Only sufficient members were ofl'ering for the offices vacant. It was decided to hold a children's fancy dress party to celebrate the institute's sixth birthday in May. Mrs. J. L. Graham was appointed delegate to the annual council meeting on April 21. A short paper dealing with the life of President Roosevelt was road bv Mrs. Mazengarb, A debate on "Should a married woman earn a salary" was held •ffirmative speakers were Mesdames Gambirazzi and P. Quinn, and the negative Mesdames J. L. Graham and ,). Gillgren. The affirmative won on a show of hands. The competition was for three best dahlias. The winner was Mrs. J Gambirazzi, with Mrs. J. C. Mazengarb second and third. POROURANGI At a meeting of the Porourangi Institute held recently Mrs. Te Kawa presided, A vote of thanks was accorded to the hostesses, Mesdames W. Tajso, W. Campbell, B. Te Puni, D. Hughes and R. Walker, for providing the birthdav luncheon. The following officers were elected' President, Mrs. Tamahori; vice-pre-sidents, Mesdames Waititi and George; secretary, Mrs. Shcrriff; treasurer, Mrs. Walker; press correspondent. Mrs. B. Te Puni.

A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Te Kawa, president tor the past two years, and secretary. Mrs. J. Walker.

Mrs. Te Kawa proposed a motion of sympathy to Mrs. Waititi in the loss of her husband, and Mrs. Milner and Mrs. Walworth in the loss of their father, the late Pene Heihi, and grandniece, Mrs. N. Collection.—Mrs Matanuku, 1; Mr?. Waititi. 2 ORMOND The monthly meeting' of the Ormond Women's Institute was held on Tuesday, March. 7, Mrs. dimming presiding over a good attendance. Mrs. Cumniing presented Miss M. Johnson with a little token from her fellow members, in view of Miss Johnson leaving for England next month as a delegate to the world conference of Women's* Institutes. Miss W. Lysnar gave a very interesting address on "Artery Bleeding Mid Artificial Respiration," for which she was accorded' a hearty vote of thanks. Members look forward to ■mother visit from her in the near future. On the motion of Mrs. G. Grayson. seconded by Mrs. Dixon, it was decided that a president's chair should be bought iii memorv of the late president, Mrs. D. Smith. Mrs. Cram gave a photograph frame for the "in•pirn lions'! so that they could be seen by all. At the April meeting a sixpence "bring and buy" will be held for the federation's funds. The competitions resulted: —Cooking ■md eating apples: Mrs. Pevreal, 1: Miss .lean Pardoe, 2. Child's 1 dress: Mrs. Pevreal, 1. Mrs. Pardoe. who was in charge of 'he trades table, did good business. The hostesses for the afternoon were "Mrs. W. Lovelock, Mrs. Nickerson and Miss Jean Pardee.

KOPUAWHARA The annual moo!in;; of the Kopuawhara Institute was held in the Y.M.C.A. on Thursday, March 2, Mrs. Cummins presiding over a full attendance. Mrs. dimming read a very pleasing report on the institute's work during her term of office and thanked the committee who did not seek reelection. The following officers were elected Cor the ensuing year:—President, Mrs. Swannell; vice-president, Mrs. White; secretary, Mrs. Doyle; treasurer, Mrs. Gibson; press correspondent, Mrs. Worsfold. The balance sheet showed the institute to be in a sound position. KOTEMAORI The annual meeting of Kotemaori Institute was held at Mrs. Jones' home on Thursday. Mrs. Haliburton welcomed Mesdames Currin and Reidy as new members. The annual report and balance sheet were read. Reviewing the year's work, the president said it had been very satisfactory. She expressed the hope that during the coming year a still greater improvement would be shown. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs. Haliburton; vice-president, Mrs. L. Jones; secretary, Miss Monteath; treasurer, Mrs. S. Jones; competition secretary, Mrs £. Boustcad. The amusement competition was won 'by Mrs. L. Jones. The retiring officers, Mesdames Haliburton, L. Jones and Bee, were presented with pretty bouquets. TAMARAU The Tamarau Institute held its annual meeting and the election of officers on Saturday. Mrs. Wright, Motu, and Mrs. MoCliskie congratulated the institute on the success of the past year. Reports were given by the secretary, Mrs. Gray, by the treasurer, Mrs. Hall, and by the conveners of all circles, wrich showed affairs to be very satisfactory. Mrs. Wright, the federation secretary, particularly mentioned the help given by the Tamarau secretary, Mrs. Gray. Mrs. Wallen was re-elected president. The new committee is as follows:—Mesdames MacDonald, Gray, Jones, Hall, Niven, Dennis, Rhodes, Mason and Lord. Mesdames Tasker and Graham will continue their good work with the arts and crafts, Mrs. Mason with the gardening, and Mrs. Elliott and Miss Hitchens the drama, with Mrs. Dennis to assist them. The first meeting will be held as follows: Arts and crafts, March 28; gardening at Mrs. A. Campbell's, March 21. A social evening will be held on or Voout March 21. Mrs. Lord was appointed delegate to the coming council meeting. Mrs. Gray and Mrs. Oxenham each received a prize for winning the aggregate points during the past six months' •competitions. Hostesses for the coming meeting pre Miss Bell and Mesdames M. Campbell. K. Campbell. Ballentyne, Lord, lianna, and Jones. PATUTAHI The annual meeting of the Patutahi institute was held on March 1. Th-3 president. Mrs. J. Atkins, welcomed three visitors, including one from Scotland, who is visiting relatives in New Zealand. Three now members vere enrolled. The report and balance-sheet were /cry satisfactory. Entertainment held during the past 12 months include the annual ball, (lower slnw. >irthday party, children's Christmas party and the annual picnic, all of which were very successful. Courts ■vere entered at both the exhibition of work in July and the A. and P. Show in November, gaining a prize in each instance. Donations were sent to the Poverty Bay Federation and Dominion Federation, eggs to the children's creche, and a good parcel to the Makogai leper station. The annual council meeting in Gisborno i was attended by Mrs. C. Robinson as ' delegate, and the half-yearly meeting by Mrs. A. Waddell. Mrs. T. Peei was chosen to represent the institute at the Dominion conference, and-re-turned with much valuable information. A handsome challenge rose bowl was given by a past-president, to be used to encourage the competitions. Thanks were due to all who helped to make the past year successful. Mrs. Atkins thanked the secretary and committee for valuable assistance. Mrs. G. V. Smith proposed a vote of thanks to the president and secre tary and expressed the hope that the retiring secretary, Mrs. J. B. Clark. who is leaving the district, would pot settle too far away. WAINGAKE At the Waingake institute's March meeting Mrs. F. ShanKs to-k the cnair in the absence on holiday cthe president. The annual election was held, there being no change in the committee. The roll call, tor home remedies, disclosed some new hints in emergencies. Mrs. Wykes read a paper on the lLe of Nurse Cavcll. Tne honours in a test 'Of knitting speed were awarded Miss A. Shanks. MANUTUKE Members of the Mahutuke Institute met on Tuesday, Mrs. Kane presiding over a good attendance. The gathering took the form of a social afternoon. A welcome was extended to visitors from Gisborne. Vocal items were given by Mesdames Coleman and Bingon and violin solos by Mrs. Elliott. Two ■competitions caused much amusement. The room was gay with flowers and afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being town members. The competition was a plate of savouries, the winner being Mrs. W. A. McCliskie. MAKARAKA-MATAWHERO The annual meeting of MakarakaMatawhero Institute was held on March 1. Mrs. Lange presided over a fair attendance of members. Motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of Mrs. O'Conneli, Tolaga Bay, and with Mrs. Daniel;. Malamata, members standing in silence. The reports of the secretary and treasurer showed that the institute work is stil) going ahead. The retiring president gave ashor' address on the past year's worn: and thanked members for the support they had given. Arrangements for next month's birthday party were made. The competition, making a tailored buttonhole, was won by Mrs. O'Conneli, with Mrs. French second and Mrs. Olding third. The new president, Mrs. Livingston, secretary, Mrs. O'Meara, and treasurer, Mrs. Jackson, were introduced to the meeting. MOTU-MOTUHORA There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Motu-Motuhora Institute on March 2. The president, Mrs. A. E. Legge, occupied the chair. The competition, best value for Gd, was won by Mrs. A. E. Legge, Mrs. R. S. Fisher being second. Most points for competitions throughout the year were gained by Mrs. A. W. Thompson. with Mrs. R. S. Fisher second. During the afternoon, Mrs. A. E. Legge bade farewell to Mrs. W. McCaft'ery, who i,; leaving the district shortly. Mrs. R. C. Gibson was successful in winning a naming competition and received a small gift. Mrs. F. Read was elected delegate to the federation meeting. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. F.
