ENGINE DRIVER FINED
IRON-TYRED VEHICLE ON ROAD WITHOUT PERMIT On a charge of operating an irontyred traction engine on the highway at Waerenga-a-hika on Febru-
ary 15 without first having obtained a permit to do so, Albert J. Barber appeared this morning before Mr. E. L. |»Valton, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court and was fined 10s and costs 10s. On a further charge, of knowinly using a traction engine on a road without permission, he was .'ins-d 10s wd costs 12s. The Transport Department's .inspector. Mi-. R. Metcalfe, who prosecuted, said that the Public Works Department was concerned about the damage being done to the bitumen surface by iron-tyred vehicles. The engine driven by the defendant weighed 104 tons and was liable to do much damage. Barber had beer, asked to communicate with the Public Works Department and tc give an explanation to the department in Wellington, but had ignored the instructions. As it was the first case of its kind. Mr. Walton said he would make the fines as light as possible.
