ROVERS WIN

HOPPER SHIELD SERIES CRICKET IN WAlttOA SWIFTS DEFEAT SCHOOL (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Saturday saw the end of the Wairoa Cricket Association's Hopper Shield competition, the series ending in Rovers retaining' the trophy. Both of Saturday's games were played on the Clyde Domain, an appeal for the Light robbing Rovers of a possible first-innings' win against Nomads. In the other game Swifts succeeded in gaining a three-point win over High School. Chief interest on Saturday centred round the match between Rovers and Nomads, and as a result of the draw Rovers finished with a lead of 4?, points in the competition. Nomads won the toss and put Rovers in. After a bad start, three wickets being down for 11, Rovers concluded their innings with a total of 211, due mainly to a masterly knock by C. T. The next highest score was 25 by J. Peebles. Bowling for Nomads, Coleman took four wickets for 44 runs, W. James four for 54, and E. Beer two for 47.

Nomads had scored 140 for the ; loss of eight wickets with about a quarter of an hour to play when an appeal for the had light was upheld by the umpires. Of this total 49 were contributed by H. G. Jamieson who was associated with Coleman in an excellent stand, the pair taking the score from 61, when Nomads, had lost six wickets, to 132. Cole-1 man scored 31, and Beer 30. M. Croker was the most successful of the Rovers bowlers, taking three wickets for 48 runs, McKenzie taking three for 55, and H. Brady, two for five. Scores: — ROVERS First Innings Rowe, -stp.
