NEW ERA OPENING
,oWATERFRONT CONDITIONS HOPEFUL CONFERENCE COMMENT OF MINISTERS (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The opinion that a new era in water. side methods was opening in NewZealand was expressed by speakers at the concluding meeting of the committee set up by the conference which met to discuss cargo handling at Dominion ports. Expressing satisfaction at the result of the discussions, the Hon. P. C. Webb said that a Royal Commission had been talked about, but the idea of the Government was that the best commission was a kind set up consisting of men who knew the position and got together with open minds determined to do the right thing. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, said that the decision of the committee meant much Ip the country. Things had not been very satisfactory in the past, but the difficulties were not insurmountable. He emphasised the need for keeping clear the channels of export without which it was not much use trying to build up local industry. He assured the committee of the Government's help in giving effect to any practicable scheme. The time had gone past for talk. They had to do something that would give better results tian ever before. Mr. W. H. Bennett, for the employers, and Mr. J. Roberts, for the wto-rkers, spoke hopefully of future conditions: on the waterfront.
