CULVERT RAILS WRECKED
WAINUI ROAD ACCIDENT LIGHT LORRY HITS POLE. DRIVER SLIGHTLY HURT After wrecking the heavy wooden railing on a culvert opposite the Kaiti School .shortly after 10 p.m. yesterday a small lorry came into collision with a telegraph pole, and the driver, John Hubert Monteith, Patutahi, was able to clamber out of his severely damaged vehicle suffering only from slight head injuries. A wound on the injured man’s scalp was attended to by a doctor, and then he was admitted to Chelsea Private Hospital. It was reported this morning that Mr. Monteith’s condition was not serious, and that he was making a good recovery. v. At the time of the mishap Mr. Monteith was travelling along Wainui road in the direction Of Wainui Beach. It is understood that the cause of the accident was one of the lorry’s lights failing when another vehicle was approaching Mr. Monteith in the vicinity of the culvert. Several motorists viewed the scene of the accident later and considered that the driver would i have been fortunate to escape without serious injury. , The vehicle was extensively damaged and, after crashing through the railing dropped five or six feet before colliding with the pole. The impact was of sufficient force to snap one or two of the lines carried on the service pole.
