NEWS OF THE DAY

No Land Board Meeting;

Business which . ordinarily , would have been dealt with at the monthly meeting of the Gisborne Land ■Board yesterday was held over until next month, the March meeting having been abandoned. Good Fishing at Arapuni

The opinion that the Arapuni Lake which extends for over 20 miles up the Waikato River above the dam, was only this season coming into its own as a fishing resort, is expressed by the president of the Putaruru Acclimatisation Society, Mr. R. Lee. Fishing in the lake has been excellent this season. Anglers have found fish plentiful and in good condition-

Napier-Gisborne Road The condition of the Napier-Gis-borne road, especially on the part between Tongoio and the bottom of the Devil's Elbow, has been unfavourably commented on by travelling motorists because of the rugged and potholed surface. The surface, which is" mostly clay, is in a bad condition and needs only a few showers of rain to make it very slippery and dangerous, quite apart from the deep corrugations An Unfortuate Sneeze. When a resident of Bluff sneezed violently while standing on the Bluff wharf recently, his dental plate was accidently ejected and disappeared into the harbour through a crevice in the wharf. His chargrin at losing so necessary a possession was even greater when his efforts to regain the teeth by "angling" with a line proved futile. Finally, a diver went down into the water and. aided by the low tide, recovered the dental plate and restored it to its owner.

Refused by Reserve Bank Plans for a trip to England which were made some time ago by two Waikato residents have been frustrated by the refusal this week in both cases, of their applications to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for permits to remit money overseas to defray expenses. The cases appear to have been the first in Hamilton as, of the hundreds of applications already placed through Hamilton banks since the new legislation came into force during the first week in December the majority have met with very favourable consideration by the Reserve Bank and no difficulty has been experienced in obtaining money for overseas trips.

Gisborne Women Bowlers Farewelled The visit of the Gisborne women bowlers to Port Ahuriri, Napier, concluded yesterday afternoon, the home club entertaining the visitors at lunch during the afternoon. The weather was not fit for any games during the afternoon and competitions and card games took their place. The Port Ahuriri club president, Mrs. R. V. McCarthy, presented the prizes, which were won by Mesdames Coriet, McLaughlan, Lockwood, and Batchelor. The president of the Kahutia Club. Mrs. C. Coriet, thanked the host club for its hospitality and extended an invitation to its members to visit Gisborne shortly.
