WIN FOR PULLAR

BOOT DEFEATED GRAY SECOND IN VAULT G. QUINN RUNS SECOND HEAT ()!’’ 100 YARDS DISQUALIFIED IN 440 (IVv I'i i‘sk Association.) NAPIER, this day. The- weather was overcast but. fine for the opening of the New Zealand national athletic championships at McLean Park yesterday afternoon. A fall of rain in the early morning made the track a dritle slow, but generally the conditions were good. Eleven events, including live finals, drew a large crowd. Chief interest of the day was the mile race in which V. P. Boot met W. Pullar. Pullar finished one second ahead of Boot. 'The time, 4min.' 30scc„ though previously bettered by both men, was four seconds below the New Zealand standard time and a record for the track. Bare of Auckland took the lead early in the race, closely followed by F. J. Wade of Auckland. They maintained the lead to the three-quarter mile mark. Then Pullar, who was some distance back, began to crack on the pace. He was closely accompanied by Boot. The crowd became wildly excited as ’the pair cleared the field and raced for the tape. It appeared that. Boot misjudged, his final spurt, or else Pullar had an extra trifle of speed when the latter staved off a challenge to win in one of the most spectacular finishes seen on the ground. The three miles walk resolved itself into a battle between D. Kingston (Poverty Bay-Hawke's Bay) and J. Watson’ (Otago). They walked into the lead in turn, leaving the other competitors strung out along the ' track. In the final 'lap Watson drew ahead to win comfortably. F. S. Barraclough (West Coast, North Island) retained the pole vault title bv a narrow margin when L. Grey of Gisborne, after equalising the former’s vault, failed on the count back. H. W. Wilkins (Canterbury) won the broad jump in comfortable style with more than a foot to spare over the second man, E. Phillips, of Wellington. In the discus throw J. D. Morgan (West Coast, North Island) and Dalgle.ish (Otago) were well ahead of the third man, but a perfect throw by Morgan to 129 ft. tin. put the issue beyond doubt. The heats of the men's .sprints, middle distance fiat, and , hurdle events completed the day’s programme, leaving the major events for the final day to-day.
