GRIM NEW GAME
GAS MASKS FOR BABIES SPECIAL TYPE SUPPLIED LONDON, March 2. Britain’s babies are to learn a new and grim game, thanks to the necessity for air-raid precautions. Experts'will urge mothers to play “the game of helmets” with their children, in order to accustom them to anti-gas measures. The Daily Mail says the Government will supply a gas helmet free to every child in Britain under the age of two years. The Minister in Charge of Civilian Defence, Sir John Anderson, came to this decision, it states, after researches by Government experts, nurses and women experienced in child psychology. The helmet has been tried on 300 babies. It is easy to handle, and does no harm to health. Many babies have slept in them. They are shaped like a diver’s helmet, with a mica window in front and a small apparatus, like bellows, attached.
A survey of the nation’s basements as air-raid refuges is planned by the Government.
It is estimated that these, domestic and commercial, could shelter 10,000,000 persons.
Experts are now testing the relative strengths of steel sheets and steel props.
