MADRID REBELS STERN STEPS BY COUNCIL EXECUTION OF LEADERS MILITARY AND CIVILIAN CRUSHING COMMUNISTS (El«c. Tbl. Copyright—Unite! Press Assn.) (Reed, March' 9, 3 p.m.) LONDON, March 8. Messages front Madrid state that reinforcements of troops from the front were to-day distributed throughout the city. The spokesman of the Republican Defence Council reports that the city is calm as the troops continue to occupy the Communist positions. The Hendaye correspondent of The Times says that both the military and civil leaders implicated in the revolt against t.he Republican Defence Council are being summarily executed. Communist centres and newspapers throughout the Republican area, are being closed down. Many arrests have been made. Reports of disorders in, the provinces persist, despite reassuring messages to the Republican Prime Minister, General Mia-ja, from tire provincial capitals.
A Burgos message states that the Spanish Nationalist Admiralty forbids ships of any nationality to enter the harbours between Adra and Sagunto, comprising the whole Republican coast. Submarines have been ordered to sink any vessels attempting to enter the ports.
HELP FOR REFUGEES THOUSANDS IN FRANCE UP TO £900,000 CREDIT (Reed. March 9, 2.30 p.m.) PARIS, March 8. The Finance Committee of the Chamber of Deputies has agreed to open a credit of £900,000 for the relief ol Spanish refugees, of whom there are 441,000 in France, consisting of 220,000 soldiers; 10,000 wounded, 40,000 male civilians, and 17,000 women, children and aged people. The Foreign Minister, M. Bonnet, stated that the United States of America had agreed to admit only 252,000 refugees yearly. South American countries would admit only Roman Catholics and Basques as farmers. Britain would take some when private organisations were ready. M Bonnet added that Mexico was raising difficulties. The Soviet was unwilling to receive any refugees, bin was aiding financially.
