G. HultquLst, M.P. for the Bay of Plenty, from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple. “With refqrencq (to your recent representations concerning the condition of the main road through Ruatoria, and the desirability of tarsealing work, I have discussed the matter with the chairman of the Main Highways Board,” wrote the Minister.

“The Waiapu County Council is the local controlling body, and it will be necessary for the board to confer with the council* .regarding whatever improvements may be necessary.

“1 am able to say, however, that the Main 'Highways Board has been endeavouring to arrange with local authorities to seal sections of highways in townships, and actually a subsidy of £1545, £3 for £l, was provided on the highways estimates for the current year for sealing work in Ruatoria. XJp to the present, however, the Waiapu County Council has not taken advantage of this subsidy.

“I am arranging to obtain a report on this matter, and also the footpath question, and shall be pleased to consider in due course whether anything can be done to effect improvements.”
