WILD CAT MENACE
NATIVE BIRDS DESTROYED
FOOD SCRAPS AT CAMPS
More complaints are stated to have been received by the Forest and Bird Protection Society about the killing of native birds by cats taken to camps of the Public Works Department in South Westland. A regular visitor lo these camps, in a letter to the society, states. "It is a crying shame to see. these cats running wild. The only feed Xo: them is our native birds.” In a letter to the Minister of Public Works, R. Semple, the society stated that insufficient care was taken in disposing of food scraps, with the result that rats were attracted to the camps. Cats were, then introduced to combat the rat trouble, but the natural food of cats was birds and fish.
