AUSTRALIAN TRADE
FAVOURABLE BALANCE
SEVEN MONTHS’ FIGURES
CANBERRA, Feb. 8
For the first seven months of the current financial year, Australia had a favourable oversea trade balance estimated at £8,405,000, an improvement of £3,002,000 over the corresponding period of 1937-38.
For the month of January the favourable balance was £117,000, against an unfavourable balance ui £1,557,000 in January, 1938. Though the total balance for the ■geven months, including bullion and specie, was favourable, commodity trade showed an unfavourable balance of £1,363,000, according to preliminary statistics issued to-day oy the Commonwealth Statistician, Dr. Ronald Wilson. The figure, however, represents an improvement of £1,882,000 on the corresponding period cf 1937-38.
Merchandise exported from Australia during the seven months was valued at £72,825,000, compared witn £79,346,000 in the same period of the previous financial year, and imports of merchandise were worth £74,188,000, ass against £82,591,000.
