LORD NUFFIELD’S PLANS
FAST FIGHTER PLANES 500 MILES AN HOUR MELBOURNE, Feb. 13. Lord Nuffield, the British motor car manufacturer and philanthropist, who reached Melbourne in the Ulysses today, said that, at the new Morris factory of 82 acres, the manufacture of Spitfire fighter planes, capable of 400 miles an hour, was: well in hand. He was looking forward to the day when his' own factory, under the direction of the British Government would produce a plane with a speed of 500 miles an'hour, which would not only recapture for Great. Britain its tir speed record, but would restore the supremacy of the Empire in the air. Lord Nuffield rejected the suggestion of war within, n few months, and said lie could not conceive war breaking out between European nations within the next year.
He added: “We will be ready for ittr enemies next time. We do not iced conscription in Great Britain tolay, because every man jack of us is wake to the .possibilities of the situaion. I think that Australia is in the ame boa t.”
