The French Minister of Finance, M. Reynaud, addressing retail traders, appealed to France to stand together to expedite the growing financial recovery.
He added that business would rapidly revive immediately foreign were removed. Herr Hitler had said that he would not fight for colonies. All realised that, a redivision of colonial possessions would not solve Europe’s problems. The chances of peace were stronger because the democracies were collaborating to save Europe, because war profited nobody. France’s stocks of gold were increasing daily. France, as in England, would henceforward publish a monthly statement showing the operation of the exchange equalisation fund.
The franc was Europe’s refuge amid the international storm. The stabilisation fund possessed ten-fold more gold than at the corresponding period of 1937.
Money was returning to the savings banks and unemployment was falling. Building permits and automobile sales were increasing. Steel and textile production was rising. He pledged himself to a campaign of economies.
