COUNTRY BAKERS PROTEST

N. AUCKLAND MEETING

Dissatisfaction with the present method of control of the flour industry a'ad also with the price charged to country bakers was expressed at a meeting of master bakers of Nortn Auckland held in Whangarci. Bakes from as far north as Kaitaia to as far south as Helensville were present. Previously, a meeting of Whangarci master bakers protested against the increased price of flour, and a questionnaire was sent to all bakers in North Auckland asking their opinion of the present system of control and the increased price. All the replies expressed dissatisfaction. Replies were also received from master bakers’ subassociations in Gisborne, Hamilton, Franklin, Thames and Paeroa promising to give support to representations to the Government protesting against the increase in price.

The meeting decided to make further representations through the Auckland Master Bakers’ Association, and the Dominion association, for the discussion of the matter at the annual conference ol' the majder bakers in Nelson this month.

it was considered by the meeting that members of the Wheat Committer did not know the problems of the country bakers. Although the cost of bread delivery in the smaller towns was greater than in Auckland and the other main centres, the same price if bread had been llxed. The opinion was expressed that country grocers should pay the same price for flour as the baker.

Representations will be made to the Wheat Committee regarding the matters discussed.
