KING’S PRIZE SHOOTING FORMER WINNER’S SON JET NR IN OTAGO MATCH (Per Press Association.) TRENTHAM, this day. Firing over the short ranges in the series of matches for the championship belt was completed at the national rifle meeting at Trentham yesterday. When shooting ceased for the day,, B. Masefield, of the Nelson-Marlbor-ough Regiment of Mounted Rifles, was leading for the King’s Prize with an aggregate score of 288 out of the possible 300. He is 18 years of age and is a son of Captain W. N. Masefield, who has won the King’s Prize three times. This is the second national meeting that Masefield, jun., has attended. His first was as a college student two years ago. One point behind Masefield is F. Bowes, of the Auckland City Rifle Club and the winner of the belt in 1935. Five marksmen, A. F. Symonns (Ashhurst), G. G. Kelly (Karori), 11. Harries (Christchurch), I. J. Spry (Auckland City), and D. G. Wyllie (West Taieri) have the next best scores, each with 286.

The marksmen moved back to long ranges to-day lor the last three matches in the series before the final' match for the King’s Prize.

Good scores were registered yesterday by the first details to go down at the mounds for the Wellington match of 10 rounds at 500 and 600 yards, the firing of which took all the morning. In the early morning, which was calm, possibles were plentiful. Later the wind freshened and there were a lot of windage errors by marksmen who found it difficult to follow the rapid changes.

First place in the Wellington match was filled by F. Bowes (Auckland City) with 99, and F. H. James (Napier) was second with 98. Both of them had the possible at 500yds.

Possibles were registered in the Otago match, of 10 rounds at 300vds., by E. M. Izitt (Kaponga), F. J. Jeune (Gisborne), B. Masefield (Blenheim), W. D. Milne (Gore), and L. Welch (Kaipororo). They received £3 12s each. The Otago match of 10 rounds at 600yds. was won by R. J. King (Masterton), with 49.
