COMPULSORY TRAINING
FARMERS' UNION VIEW
New Zealand's defence system was the subject of severe criticism by delegates attending the Northern Wairoa sub-provincial executive conference of the Farmers' Union at Ruawai. A decision was made that the Government be asked to introduce a measure of equality of .sacrifice tb' provide the necessary military forces and that all males between the ages of 16 years and 30 years be required to undertake a period of intensive military training sufficient to fit them for iruililarv service.
The remit also urged the Government to take steps to educate the neople of the position likely to arise in the even! of a war causing a direct attack on New Zetland, delegates being of the opinion that such an attack could be successfully repelled only by a complete and detailed national organisation on the basiis of every citizen being required j io render the service for which lie or she was best fitted.
