WAR IN SPAIN SUCCESSES CLAIMED PRISONERS & MATERIALS DENIAL BY REPUBLICANS ASSAULT BEATEN BACK (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Rccd. Dec. 30, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 29. A message from Burgos states that the Aragon army corps of the Spanish Nationalist forces has broken through the formidable Republican fortifications fronting the. strategic town of Balaguer, 16 miles north-east of Lerida. The Nationalists claim to have taken a further 800 prisoners and much war material. They also claim to have brought down 20 Republican warplanes during the day. A Republican communique issued at Barcelona denies that General Franco’s forces have broken through at Balaguer. The Republicans claim that the assault was beaten back after the most violent fighting. Reports from other fronts are most conflicting, indicating that the Nationalist offensive has been slowed down at least temporarily.
