SILENT ROAD DRILL
FASTER WORKING SPEED LONDON, Nov. 10. A silent pneumatic drill was referred to by Lord Horder at the Noise. Abatement League dinner on Monday, this being the invention of Mr. W. R. Pettit, of Victoria street, S.W. Lord Horder said that, if the claims for the drill were substantiated, the name of the inventor would “stand very high in the temple of fame.” Mr. Pettit said: “T have worked on the invention for two years. In a London street it would be inaudible above the traffic noise. “It drives through concrete at twice the speed of some other types of drill. It can bore through 12 inches of concrete in six seconds. “It can be operated by a youth, for there is no strain on the worker. It does not jar or jerk and is not subject to jams. “A silencer casing covers the drill, enveloping it down to pavement level.” The drill is expected to be at work on the roads in from four to six weeks' time.
