Brilliant, sunshine favoured the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Ellerslie yesterday. Tne attendance was 14,000. The track was fast. The totalisator handled .£57,808, compared with £50,45,'} on the second day last year, an increase of £7415. To Hero made the pace, being clear at the half-mile from Smoke Screen, with lengths’ intervals between Gay Son, Stretto. and Beaupartir. In the straight Te Hero was challenged but dropped out, and the issue was keenly decided between Smoke Screen and Stretto, the former prevailing by half a head, with Gay Son a neck away. In a spectacular finish the first six horses passed the post in very close order, victory going to Royevrus by half a head from Paddy the Rip, with a similar margin to Homily. Mazir was fourth. A furlong from home, Palustre came through on the inside to win by a neck from Llangollen, who was separated by a head liom Mon Acre. Royal Bachelor was fourth.
