POWER FAILURES
AUCKLAND TRAM TRAFFIC race crowds affected (Pur Pruss Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Intermittent power failures on the Epsom section of the city’s tram services caused a disruption of heavy traffic to Uhe Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Epsom yesterday at several stages. Blocks of stationary trams extended along Manukau road through Newmarket and up Khyber Pass road and when the service was restored there was a sudden influx of thousands of people into the course shortly before the start of the first race.
The longest period over which the trams were idle was from 10.50 a.in. tilt 11.5 but further intermittent interruptions occurred till 11.25, when traffic was regulated. Tlfe. trouble was overcome, but to eliminate any similar difficulty with return traffic, the Eemuera and Newmarket substations were coupled to provide power in the Epsom section. Though 142 loads were taken to the city from the course at the conclusion of the meeting, as compared with 102 on the corresponding day last year, there was no repetition of the difficulties.
