MAORI MEETS CREDITORS

DEFICIENCY TOTALS £l4l ORDERS ON EMPLOYER A Maori labourer, Albert Harold Kiripatea, appeared yesterday afternoon before the official assignee, Mr. J. N. Nalder, at a meeting of his creditors, and after the evidence had been heard the meeting was adjourned siie die. A deficiency of £l4l Is was ' shown in the .statement, the assets being nil. Mr. J. D. Kinder appeared for Willliam Garbett, and the bankrupt was represented by Mr. L. T. Burnard. In his personal statement Kiripatea said that during the past 10 years he had been residing and working as a labourer between Rotorua and Wairoa. He had been unemployed for a considerable period during the depression and gradually got into arrears with the payments of his accounts. A wife and four children were dependent upon him and since 1930 he had been doing only casual work. He had tried I to keep a banking account, but had , found it useless and there was now only 5s in the account. The witness said that he owned some native land, seven acres at Rotorua and one-eighth of an acre at Rotoiti. Cross-examined by Mr, Kinder, Kiripatea said that he gave Mr. Garbett an order on his employer for £1 a week, and at the same time lie had two similar orders operating. Although he did not have a permanent job at the time he was confident that lie would be able to meet the accounts., The rent on his native lands did not amount to much, the lot having accumulated to £0 in three years.
