CARDINAL IN VIENNA

Messages from Vienna state that a large croud gathered to-night outside the palace of Cardinal Inniizer in St. Stephen's square shouting: "Traitor!" "Criminal!" "Send him to Dachau." The police prevented rioting. They have previously ordered the suspension of a series of 'bible study services which 'began at St. Stephen's Cathedral on Sunday, and were due to >e concluded with a sermon from the Cardinal on Thursday.

Hundreds arriving to-night found the cathedral closed and the square and the surrounding streets guarded. A number of anti-Catholics demonstrated. The police eventually cleared the streets and placed a cordon round the cathedral. Many arrests were made. Entrance Through Friend's House It now is revealed that the cardinal was visiting a religious institution when the .palace was attacked , en Saturday. He returned at 10.30 p.m. to find the cathedral square closed to traffic. He obtained entrance to the palace through the house of a friend, Bishop Kamprath.

It adds that Herr Buerckell will shortly make a statement in connection with the matter. •Herr Hitler is reported to have beer, annoyed on hearing the news when he was at Saarbrucken yesterday. He sent a special emissary to Vienna to investigate. Those in well-informed circles expect the early release of Dr. Niemoller. . The Vatican City correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that the Pope is awaiting Cardinal Innitzers account, after which he will lodge a protest. The Osservatore Romano protests in the name of Christianity and civilisation.
