GAMES DAY
HILL-COUNTRY SCHOOLS (JOOD TIME AT MATAWAI (H.irald Com>spond<iiit.) The children of the Poverty Bay hill schools met in Matawai on Saturday afternoon for their sports. Perfect weather conditions drew a large number of parents and Other onlookers, and the child;'":! had a most enjoyable time. Afternoon t'ea, prepared by the parents, was dispensed by the committeemen's wives. The schools representee were Motu, Motuhora, Homebrook, Matawai, Rakauroa, Koranga, and Otoko. The football and basketball took the form of a Yankee tournament and the games were kept going under the able management of the masters.
Some good games of basketball wers played, the first between Koranga and "Matawai resulting' in no score on either side. The final between Matawai and Motu was outstanding, and both teams showed good form and able passing, but the more accurate shooting of the Matawai goal-throwers resulted in their winning. At the end of the round Matawai and Koranga, which had an equ d number of points, played of for the cup, Matawai proving the winner:-. Ten games of football were played. Matawai winning, the cup, with Motu and Motuhora coining second with an equal number of points.
The basketball teams took part ii :i pasxbal! competition and relay races
while the boys also toot, part in relay races and tunnel ball, Matawai emerging victorious i:i each ease.
Thanks were expressed to Mr. Jndd and Miss F. Moffat for refereeing the basketball, Ray McDonald and David Thompson for their assistance as footbail line umpires, and •'" tlia ladbs for their help with afternoon tea.
