MAORI ELECTION

157 POLLING BOOTHS VOTING HOURS 9 TO 5 PliKl\U?l.\'(! PO'!.' I-'IIIDAV" KASTKRN KIVKCTORATC The election for the appointment of. representatives of the Maori race to Parliament will be held on Friday, October 14, and native electors in all parts of New Zealand will be given an opportunity to express their views upon the policy of the Government party and its opposition.

Four seats in the House of Reprcntatives are available to native

members, and on this occasion the election promises to be even more spirited than in 1935, when there was a substantia! number of candidates for all seats, and a heavy poll was recorded.

This year will see the system of secret balloting initiated among the Maori people, and every effort ha* been made in advance to prepare the electorate for the change in method which it will experience on Friday. "instead ol the simple procedure followed in the past, Maori electors will be obliged to answer a number or questions regarding their qualifications, and will then record their own votes, with the assistance of the deputy-returning officer if need be. Electors have been instructed to strike out the names of candidates for whom they do not wish to vole. In conformity with the general tenor of the electoral regulations, any voting paper which carries a clear indication of the voter's intentions will be valid; but the striking-out method is strongly recommended as that least likely 10 lead to misunderstanding and the 'unintentional mutilation of voting papers. Polling will proceed from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., with provision lor an extension of the hours if that proves necessary. Voters should record their votes at the polling-places nearest to their homes, and so facilitate the taking of tin; poll.
