IMPORTANT AMENDMENT PAYMENT FOR HOLIDAYS The importance of an amendment placed on the Statute Book during the last session of Parliament and affecting the Statutes Amendment Act, 1936, was pointed out by Auckland employers, who this week receive:! copies of the amendment. It takes the form of an additional section, number 17. to this Act and amends section 14 of the Factories Act. with regard to the employment of casual workers within a certain time r.l a statutory holiday. The amendment wtil operate throughout New Zealand from yesterday. Under the old law any casual worker given employment within foil ' days of a statutory holiday had to b<paid tor that holiday, but the amendment extends that period to 14 day?. Thus, a casual worker engaged within the next two weeks, no matter for how short a period, must, it is stated be paid for Labour Day on Octobc:24.

A special section. IT (3a), provides partial exemption for bakeries, but only if the worker Is employed en the :iay immediately before the holiday. Tims, if a man were engaged to assist with the rush on a Friday immediately preceding a statutory holiday on a Saturday he would noi have to bo paid Cor the Saturday. Payment must be made, however, if he is given employment on the Thursday and ths Friday or only the Thursday. This period is also of 14 days Instead of informer four days.
