Social Security
Sir,—The letter signed E. Harris, in Thursday’s paper, might cause some people to think that Is in the illwages is the sole source of finance for the Social Security Bill. The bill is not passed yet, and it is being altered occasionally. The time to judge is on the finished article, and if it is good the whole truth will not hurt it; but if it is bad, people should be allowed to say so. —Yours, etc., FARMER.
Sir, —Mr. Harris does not appear to have a very full grasp of figures. He entirely overlooks the fact that most children over 16 are working, and that they will therefore be paying this 1 extra Is in the £l. But what is more important, he has conveniently forgotten that the total cost of the scheme | will involve a payment of from 2s 6d to 2s 9d in the £1 on all income . and that the extra Is 6d or Is Pd has got to be paid by someone. And we : ■ know that in the end practically all 1 taxation comes out of the pockets of I the worker and the producer.—Yours, , | etc., CAUTIOUS.
