The Election Issues

Sir, —In last Saturday’s leader you say that the issues have been clarified. It is customary, of course, for people to demand to know the policy of the candidates who come before them, but such a demand is not always backed by reason. It is surely only reasonable for the electors to know the policy of any political party which is seeking political power to govern those electors for the next three years and perhaps four years or five years. Again, you say the one major issue on which the election will be fought is Socialism or private enterprise. The meaning of Socialism is hard to define, but if the brand of Socialism the Labour Government has dealt out to all the people, over the last three years in a fair sample, then in all probability 80 per cent, of electors will ask for another three years of the same brand. It will be found that the major issue to be fought out at the election will be: Is this Dominion to be governed by the people for the people by a Government that will guarantee a decent standard of life to all the people, or will it be governed by a Government which is hoping to get back to power witjr a blank cheque as in 1931, and then form their policy as suggested by vested interests, both within the Dominion and from London,—Yours, etc. FREE THINKER.
