ARBOR DAY
GISBORNE CELEBRATIONS CEREMONY AT WAIICANAE In celebration of Arbor Day a large number of senior pupils of the primary schools in Gisborne and the Gisborne High School assembled at the V/aikanae Beach, where they were addressed by Mr. J. 11. Hall, DeputyMayor, and later participated in a treeplanting ceremony. Mr. Hall explained to the children that Arbor Day was intended to stimulate their interest in their surroundings. He pointed out the disastrous results of the deforestation that had been carried out in the earlier days of the Dominion, and spoke of the great value the natural bush was to the country. The children were addressed also by Dr. H. Goulding Rice, president of the Gisborne and District Beautifying Society, who said that the object of the ceremony at the beach was to give them some idea of what was being done to the waterfront. After inspecting the improvement work at the beach the pupils planted a number of trees near Awapuni road and were urged to take a personal interest in the growth of the plants.
