SOUTH AFRICAN ANTHEM
RECOGNITION SOUGHT
MOVE IN ASSEMBLY
(Reed. July 28, 9 a.m.) CAPETOWN, July 27
Dr. D. F. Malan, the leader of the Opposition, submitted a resolution in the South Africa Assembly to-day demanding that a single purely South African, anthem oe officially recognised.
He said that despite violence and suppression South Africa had obtained the right to decide her own destiny. She had her own flag and should have her own exclusive anthem.
A message dispatched from Capetown on July 2 stated that a League of Equal Rights had been formed to ensure the equality of the British and Afrikaans national anthems and the British and Union flags. The Afrikaans anthem "Die Stem van Suid Afrika" (Voice of South Africa), has been translated into English and has been sung at several gatherings.
The South African anthem, the singing or playing of which on formal occasions, sometimes in precedence to "God Save .the King," has given rise to several acrimonious disputes, has been translated as follows:
Out of the blue of our heaven, out of
the depth of our sea, Over our eternal mountains (where the cliffs throw echoes). Through our wide desolate plains where the groan of the ox wagon is heard), Rustles the voice of our beloved land, South Africa. We'll answer to your call, we'll sacrifice what you ask, We'll live and die for you, South Africa.
