Golf Course for Nurses The Dannevirkc Hospital Board recently discussed a proposal to lay down a nine-hole golf course for the benefit of the nurses, the scheme being ananimously approved. The course will be on the board's property adjacent to the institution. Mang-apapa Scout Card Party A very enjoyable flag five-hundred party was held in the Scout Hall, Mangapapa, by the Scout committee, nine tables being required. The prize Cor most clips was won 'by Mrs. Richie, and at the winning ta'ble were Mr. and ■Mrs. Dunstone and Mr. and Mrs. Suteliffe. while the travelling envelope was secured by'Mr. Alston and another prize by Mrs. Steel. Gisbome Repertory Society The Gisbome Repertory Society .Meld an entertainment on Monday night in the society's room in Turangaimi Chambers, which proved very enjoyable. The programme included a reading and one-act play by repertory members, and a one-act play 'by the drama section of the Townswomen's Guild, whose members gave much pleasure to the Repertory Society by contributing to the evening's entertainment such a delightful item. Tt is the desire of the Repertory Society to hold a meeting every Monday evening in future, the programmes of entertainment to 'be varied. Mah-Jong Party On Tuesday evening Mrs. P. W. Barlow entertained some of her friends at a very enjoyable mah-jong party at her home in Iranui road. The tables were placed in the drawing-room, which was prettily decorated with leeland poppies, jonquils and lachanalia. A dainty supper was served informally. The hostess welcomed her guests wearing a 'becoming 'frock of black panne velvet relieved with touches of gold lame satin. Among the guests were Mesdames F. Fenwick, F. H. Bull. A. G. Cairns, E. J. Vennell, K. Crarer, D. HallCrease, A. M. Welham, C. D. Armstrong, W. Kohn, T. F. -Mitchell, J. Trafl'ord; Misses R. Wauchop. M. Walton and M. Foster. Makaraka Garden Circle The garden circle of the MakarakaMatawhero Women's Institute met in the Makaraka Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Owing to sickness being prevalent in the district, and the unsettled weather conditions, only six members attended. Mrs. iMoore, the convener, moved a vote of sympathy with 'Mrs. Darton. one of the circle members, and also with her relatives in their recent bereavement, members carrying this in silence. In the absence of Miss O'Connell. Mrs. A. Lange acted as secretary. The roll call, "Hints on seed-growing, was well responded to. The competitions resulted:—Vase of Flowers. —Miss Toole, 1: 'Mrs. Johnson, 2; Mrs. Weastell, 3. Vase of Violets.—Mrs. Weastell, 1; Miss Toole, 2. An interesting paper was given by Mrs. A. Lange, after which Mrs. Moore gave a short talk on what to sow and plant during August. 'Mrs. Weastell acted as tea hostess in the absence of Mrs. Parker. Poverty Bay Ladies' Golf Club Derpite the wet weather and heavy condition of the Awapuni links on Tuesday afternoon after the heavy rain of the preceding days, comparatively good scores were handed in 'by the winners of the L.G.U. medal match played in conjunction with the third qualifying round 'for the Oman Cup by members ' of the Poverty Bay Ladies' Golf Club. The successful A i grade player was 'Mrs. G. M. Chrisp. 90—Hi—74. and in the B grade Mrs. L. Winter, 96—22—74, carried off the honours. Entries for the annual provincial tournament, which was postponed from the original dates fixed for this week until Tuesday, 'Wednesday and Thursday of next week, will be taken by the secretary, Miss D. Bagnall. Lowe street, until next Saturday morning, the time having 'been extended as the postponement occasioned by the recent inclement weather has necessitated a new draw being made. The draw for the Oman Cup tournament is published elsewhere in this issue, the first round of which is to be completed by August 13. Women's Christian Temperance Union There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, held in the Methodist schoolroom, Bright treet, on Tuesday afternoon, the president, Mrs. W. E. Goffe, presiding. Mrs. A. Morris took the devotional exercises, and instead of the usual Bi'ble reading she took the text, "In quietness and comfort shall he your strength," as the subject of an interesting and helpful talk. The speaker asoeiated the text with the hard fight the W.C.T.U. is engaged in with its campaign against the traffic in alcoholic drink, and urged her 'fellowmembers to take courage from the words, to do their duty cheerfully and not to worry about immediate results, but to work quietly and confidently with the belief that ultimate success will reward all efforts. The cradle roll superintendent, Mrs. Stockman, reported the enrolment of four new members, and the resignation of two members owing to their having reached the age limit''for membership. A round table discussion of the work if tm W.C.T.U. took up the remainder of the afternoon. It -was agreed that the inauguration of milk bars was a step in the right direction for encouraging young people to leave alcoholic drink alone. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Stockman. Passing down the Btreet a few days ntxo, I saw a very beautiful Dinner Frock in a shop window, and I thought to myself that might J ust suit me. It was a black floral gown mado on slimming lines. The sleeves were long and rucked at the cuff. The neck being round just suited me. and it was topped off with three pas-tel-tinted gardenias. The waist was belted and finished with a matching clasp. ■ So I went in and priced it. I found it was reasonable and Buited me so well that I said, "This is mine!" Pre-Wedding Party A very enjoyable prc-nuptial party was given by Mrs. T. McEwan last Saturday at her home, Perry street, Mangapapa, in honour of her sister, Miss Mavis Preston, whose marriage to Mr. David Gedye takes place this week. Competitions were won by Mrs. R. McKay and Miss M. Atkins, after which a dainty afternoon tea was served. Many delightful gifts were opened by the guest of honour, assisted by her bridesmaid, Miss F. Hyland. Visitors to England Sir Cyril and Lady Ward, Christchurch, who are visiting England, were invited to attend the Royal garden party. Miss Theresa Ward was presented at Court on July 5. They have taken a flat in London, and Sir Cyril is engaged in 'business activities. After arriving in Greenock early in June, Sir Cyril and Lady Ward and their daughter motored through Scotland, and on their way to London visited the English lakes. They intend to make a short tour on the Continent .next month, and afterwards to visit friends and relatives in different parts of England. At the end of September they will leave for New Zealand, probably by the Strathmore, which is due in Sydney on November 10, Auckland November 19, and Wellington November 21. St. John's Ladies' Guild, Mangapapa A most successful card party was held by the members of St. John's Ladies'" Guild, Mangapapa, at the home of Mrs. C. Steele, Valley road, but owing to the inclemency of the weather and prevalent illness there was not a large attendance. The players at the winning table were Mesdames Boys, A. Clare and Turnbull, and Mr. Mclvor. Prizes for securing the most flags and the travelling envelope competition were won by Mr. Mclvor, while another prize was won by Mrs. Goldsmith. In the absence of the president, Mrs. E. Trowell, her duties were carried out by Mrs. C. 11. Ferris, who presented the prizes and proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Mclvor for conducting the games and to Mr. and Mrs. Steele for the use of their home. A daintv supper was much appreciated. Women's Club Literary Circle The literary circle of the Gisbome Women's Club met at the club rooms on Monday afternoon, but owing to the wet weather and prevailing sickness the attendance was smaller than usual. The members present were Mrs. N. Hooper, president. Mrs. G. S. Vincent, convener, Mesdames Woodward, I. J. Quigley. !H. E. Hill, H. Holmes, and H. T. Sinclair, and Miss E. M. Clark. The subject for the afternoon was "A short reading from a favourite author." The programme was opened by Mrs. Quigley with a talk on "Bomola," by George Eliot, followed 'by a short reading from the same book. Miss Clark read a passage from "Oliver Twist," by Charles Dickens; Mrs. N. Hooper chose extracts from "The Story of San Michele," by Alex Munthe; and Mrs. Holmes read from "The Marriage of Nicholas Cotter," by Nell Scanlan, each reading being accompanied by a short talk and discussion. Time did not allow for readings by all the members present, but those given were much appreciated. A dainty tea was served by Mrs. H. T. Sinclair, the hostess Tor the afternoon. 1 "Faith, Hope and Charity" was chosen as the subject for the next monthly meeting. Party for Bride-elect A very jolly evening way spent at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. T. .1. Langford, Aberdeen road, recently, the occasion being a "miscellaneous" gift party for their niece, Miss Mavis Preston, "whose marriage to Mr. David Gedye takes place next Saturday. The drawing-room was gay with Australian daisies and spring bulbs, tastefully arranged. Competitions, games and community singing made the time pass all too quickly, and during the evening a sumptuous ■savoury Jsupper was served buffet fashion in the dining-room. After supper the bride-elect opened the many gift parcels, with the assistance of her bridesmaid-to-be. Miss Freda Hyland, revealing numerous attractive articles for her future home. Suitable speeches acknowledg ing the gifts and thanking the host and hostess and guests were made by Miss Mavis Preston, Mr. David Gedye and Mr. R. Preston, sen. The hostess welcomed her guests wearing a becoming frock of black crepe-de-chine, with a silk velvet bridge coat. A charming frock of cinnamon brown was worn by the bride-elect. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. R. Preston, sen., Mr. and Mrs. R. Preston, jun., Mr. and Mrs. McEwen, Mr. and Mrs. T. Pilgrim, Mr. and Mrs. Phelps, Mr. and Mrs. Atkins, Mr. and Mrs. C. Hacche, Mr. and Mrs. F. Mcßreen, Mr. and Mrs. Ashdown; Mesdames Gedye, Pilgrim, Hoe, Sealey, Pritchard, Hyland and Parker; Misses B. Pritchard, P. Pilgrim, J. Sealey, D. Lyndsay, P. Cole, and R.
