NATIONAL TITLES

TOURNEY AT GISBORNE ENTRIES CLOSE SEPT. 7 Most of the active boxing associations throughout the Dominion will be making selections soon from among their amateur boxers for the national championship tournament to be held in Gisborne on September 15, 16 and 17. Nominations are to be filed with the New Zealand Boxing Association on or before September 7, and this year there will be a few at least well ahead of the "deadline." Last season, several entries were refused because they came to hand too late. It is well known to all officers of the association, but not to all amateur aspirants for title honours, that entries must be forwarded through a district association. Direct entry by individual boxers is not provided for, and while this is a handicap to boxers in districts which have no active organisation going, it would be impossible to conduct a tournament on the open entry lines. The posts of referees and judges for the national championship tournament are also in the hands of the New Zealand association, and nominations have to be made through district bodies. The list will close on August 22 in Wellington, and the appointments will be made available as soon as possible after that date.
