TO-NIGHT'S BOXING
OALTAUX'S CONTEST MARSHALL TO APPEAR HARD FIGHT ASSURED The replacement of Jack Davis, Hastings, by Clarrie Marshall, GisIborne, in to-night's professional contest in the Opera House under the auspices of the Gisborne Box.kig Association has'been noted 'by followers of the stport in this district with keen interest. The fact that Marshall is available, and fit for a hard contest, is a fortunate circumstance for the Gis■bornc association, for it assures the public of the opportunity to see a hard match in which the Aucklander should 'be fully extended. Arrangements had gone so far in connection with the tournament that if a postponement had been decided on there would have been a considerable loss involved. There would have been no hesitation in accepting that loss in preference to offering an unattractive bout to the public; but Marshall's readiness to enter the ring against Caltaux solved the association's difficulties completely. A Fine Bout Those who saw Marshall fight Davis three or four weeks ago will feel satisfied with the prospects of to-night's contest. Marshall was 'beaten in. that match, but it was hailed as the finest fight staged 'by the district promoting body since Tom Heeney left for England more than 10 years ago. Any man who could put up such a fight should 'be worth seeing at any time, and in this match with Caltaux Marshall has an opponent of the same hard-hitting type as Davis. Subsidiary attractions on to-night's programme include a special sixround bout 'between Darcy Heeney, New Zealand amateur welterweight champion, .and A. Kitt, Hawke's Bay champion. Kitt is described as a fast and scientific 'boxer, bound to please the crowds and as willing to mix it as freely as any amateur in the New Zealand "ing. He has been having plenty of fighting lately, and should *be in great form for his meeting with Heeney. There are also several other amateur bouts, specially chosen to test the merits of those boxers who may represent Poverty Bay at the annual New Zealand amateur championship tournament in September. Mr. W. Rickard will referee the contests, and will have the assistance of recognised judges of boxing.
