Al lloslak, of Seattle, who two years ago was appearing as a boy in preliminary boxing bonis, caused a surprise by winning the middleweight boxing title against Steele, whom he knocked out in the first round of a scheduled 15-round bout.
The referee, Mi', -lack Dempsey, awarded the bout to Hostak after one minute 43 seconds. Steele went down three times under a savage twohanded barrage. On the third occasion he arose gamely at the count of seven, but the referee stepped between them and raised Hostak's hand.
