LICENSEE WARNED

SELLING AFTER HOURS OTHERS ALSO FINED “He should take this as a warning that his license may be endorsed if he offends again,” said Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., this morning when fining the licensee of the Muriwai Hotel, Harry Hanmer Lunn, £5 for selling liquor after hours on June 2. The licensee’s wife, Rona Proof Lunn, was convicted and lined £1 and costs 12s for supplying the liquor. Charged with having been found on the premises after closing hours, John Nicholas Barbara, Pomare Kutia, William Edward Steel, James Dougal McMillan, and Joseph Anderson were each convicted and fined £1 and costs. The costs ranged from 10s to 17s. Senior-Sergeant J. F. 11. Macnamara said that at 8.55 p.m. on June 2, the hotel was visited by Constables Andrew and Allen. They entered the back door of the hotel and found the dide up and five men in the room. The wife of the licensee was behind the slide. The men admitted that they had gone to the hotel for a drink, flic licensee said he did not know that the men were on the premises. Lunn had been before the court on three previous occasions and "his conduct of the house was not too good and had been giving a lot of trouble.” For Lunn, Mr. M. R. Maude said that Hie licensee’s wife had gone down to the bar to get a paper and while there a friend had come in and she had served him and another with a drink. Three or four others came into the room, but they were not served. The licensee did not know that she was serving drinks in the bar. The police had visited the hotel on numerous occasions, but had not been able to got sufficient evidence until June 2. He submitted that that was proof that the hotel was well conducted.
