CHILDREN SAVED
HODSE DESTROYED EXPLOSION WAKES OWNER A large wooden house owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. G. Hancock, of Ruakaka, Te Aroha, was destroyed by fire early on Tuesday morning. The fire apparently started in the kitchen, and the house burned fiercely. Tt was over a mile outside the borough boundary, so no help Could be obtained from the fire brigade.
Mr. Hancock was awakened about 3.40 a.m. by the sound of a muffled explosion. He went into the kitchen and found that the scullery wall was ablaze. He roused his wife and they carried their three children to safety. The youngest child had a narrow escape from being suffocated, his room, which was close to the kitchen, being filled with smoke before his fnthei reached him.
Mr. and Mrs. Hancock saved only a few personal effects.
