Sydney.—June 24; Sailed, from New castle, Kaiwarra, for Wellington.
A deputation representing the Gisborne Master Printers’ Association waited upon the Poverty Bay Electric • Power Board to-day to present a protest against .the board sending printing jobs out of the district. It was pointed out by the spokesman, Mr. P. W. Bushnell, that local printers had to face high costs, and that on large jobs they could ndt compete with the automatic machinery used by large printing firms elsewhere, especially when large firms were prepared at times to accept worn without profit merely to keep their plants going in the meanwhile. Tec board members discussed several aspects of the question, with the printers, and later decided to continue to invue outside tenders for major printing jobs. A passage in the financial committee’s report to to-day’s meeting of the Poverty Bay Electric-Power Board relating to street lighting gave rise to a discussion in which Mr. J. H. Hall cx planted the Borough Council s wish to have the best street-lighting scheme within its financial capacity, which, hov/ever. was limited. The engines to the board, Mr. F. Matthewson, had been unable to recommend that the board proceed with tests of centresuspension lighting, this type ,avin -= been recognised as not being the mo-ot serviceable. In reply to Mr. Hall, he pointed out that the board would have to face a considerable expense in purchasing fittings for an improved scheme of street lighting, and he was anxiops that anything spent in this way should be directed to installing the be.,, scheme available. The discussion turned on the suitability of centrelighting for towns such as Gisborne, and it was eventually decided, on tno motion of the chairman. Mr. F. R. Bad. to discuss the matter (further aftei *. board’s engineer had had an opportunity of placing all the arguments before a committee of the Borougn Council.
