RIVERS RISE AGAIN

HAWKE'S BAY AREA SURGE BREAKS STOP BANKS (Per Press Association.) HASTINGS, this day. Exceptionally heavy rain in the back country caused further Hooding yesterday. The level of both the Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri Rivers rose'considerably and at a late hour last night it was reported that both have continued to rise. The Ngaruroro was stated to be in three-quarter flood a( Whanavvhana. In some localities Sin. of rain fell in 24 hours on country already waterlogged. Last evening water was again flooding through the stop banks which were broken by the last flood and the water was again flowing oyer the Pakowhai road. Residents of Clive feared another disastrous flood unless the rain stopped.

The level of the Ngaruroro River was Gft. on the gauge at the Fernhill bridge last night and was rising when last read. Because of the breaking of the stop banks further down the river, the water was moving away from Fernhill more quickly than normally, and it was stated that had it not been for this the gauge would have registered more than Bft.

It is difficult to discover the conditions ruling in several outlying districts, because as was the case in the last flood, many telephone services are out of order. Three inches of rain were registered at Koraki in 24 hours from 9 a.m. on Tuesday until 9 a.m. yesterday. Another I.sGin. fell from 9 a.m. yesterday to 7 p.m. last night. It was then still raining heavily with a wind of almost gale force.
