DOMINION UNEMPLOYED
SURVEY BY MINISTER (Par Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The unemployment return tor April 9, 1938, issued by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. 11. T. Armstrong, last night, including those on the register who for health or other reasons are unfit for employment, discloses a reduction of 12,738 as against the corresponding fißure for April 10, 1937. Compared with the position for the past month, however, there is an increase of 520 brought about by the falling off of seasonal employment.
This small increase in registrations has been revealed in past returns, and is to be expected during the winter months of the year. Details as at April 9, 1938, are as follow.--Registered, but not on relief, 1135; on sustenance awaiting placement, 3281; on scheme No. 5 relief, 2799; total, 7215; on sustenance, totally unfit for employment for health or other reasons, but being afforded relief from the Employment Promotion Fund. 8000. For the four-weekly period under review the expenditure from the fund under the heading "promotion of employment," as distinct from relief expenditure, is estimated at £231.950.
