AGAINST FOREIGN WARS
AUSTRALIAN LABOUR MR. CUR TIN EXPLAINS MELBOURNE, April 17. The Federal Labour leader, Mr. J. Curtin, addressing the Easter conference of the Victorian Labour Party, yesterday, declared that Australia, having regard to her geographical position, was not able to play the role Of "world constable." "Wo pasF ; nf through perilous times," said Mr. Curtin, "and the most important thing for this nation to do, to contribute to the peace of the world, is to avoid giving provocation to other nations. We should make it clear that we are prepared to -be neighbourly, and to assist . every country in the promotion, of better industrial and social conditions throughout the world. We should be prepared to collaborate in the cultural services of neaee. ; "National ind social Fcrviccs would be frustrated if Australia became involved in conflicts remote from Australian shores. Labour believes that the arms and strength and power of the countries forming the British of Nations should be used exclusively for the defence ol v.—(toriPS within that commonwealth This will enable Labour to demand that Australian Governments shall not endeavour to divert attention from their dutv to proceed with important measures of industrial and social progress."
