EXPORT APPLE SEASON

CLOSING NEXT WEEK SECOND DIRECT LOADING The apple export season will conclude next week, unless an extension is granted for the later varieties, which have not coloured very well this year. A further direct shipment will be made by the s.s. Westmoreland tomorrow. This will be the second direct loading this season, and will enable Gisborne growers to send a quantity of fruit, which will ease the position on the local market. Growers in the district, at the start of the season, anticipated sending very little fruit overseas this year, relying on the market in New Zealand to absorb all but a few thousand cases. However, the crops yielded so well that thev found there was too much to be absorbed in our own markets, but iby that time difficulty was experienced in securing sufficient space on overseas vessels.

The Westmoreland's loading on Thursday is the result of representations made, 'seeking additional space. It is expected that 1500 cases will be available, if growers have been able to pick sufficient of the crops during the wet weather of the past few days. An extension of the season for a week beyond the official closing date of May 12 is bein'g sought by Gisborne growers. Hawke's Bay orchardists have been granted such an extension, in view of the poor conditions for colour, and space will be available to them up to May 20.
