Sheehan Street

Sir.—Hail, rain or shine, if there is a worse road surface, carrying an equal volume of traffic in Gisborne than Sheehan street, my sympathy goes out to the residents. When the weather is dry, housewives work overtime trying to keep their homes free of dust, raised by the very frequent passing of cars and trucks; I recently counted 10 cars and trucks in 14 minutes, and next day 17 in 22 minutes. When it rains the road surface resembles a shell-pitted battlefield. Cyclists complain bitterly that there is barely room for- them to ride on the footpaths in comfort, so overgrown arc they with coarse grass. Every side street off Ormond road, from Stafford street to Ballance street is clown in permanent surface, excepting Sheehan street —why 'this is not done passes all comprehension: of course there arc no councillors resident there, so perhaps this explains something.—Yours, etc. DUSTY MUD.
