LIZARDS FOR ZOO

ARRIVAL AT AUCKLAND OVER 6PT IN LENGTH (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day Two unusual passengers which ar rived by the Wanganella at Auckland from Sydney yesterday were a pair of Australian lace monitor lizards or tree goannas for the Auckland zoo. The> were shipped in a case packed plentifully with straw and arrived at the zoo yesterday afternoon little worse foi their voyage. Each of them is over 6ft. in length. The lizards, which were obtained at Taronga Park Zoo, are of a species which always grows to a length of at least 6ft. Their prevailing colours are black and yellow, and although they are harmless so far as human beings are concerned, they are robbers and scavengers with a taste for an amazing variety of food, including dead or living animals, and any kind of bird’s egg-
