TAHORA ACCIDENT
SCHOOLMISTRESS INJURED TRYING TRIP TO HOSPITAL A country school teacher, Miss Thelma Johnston, Tahora, had a painful experience yesterday, when she fractured her leg at the school and in order to receive treatment In hospital had to be transported by ambulance for 42 miles to the Cook Hospital. Part of the journey was over an exceptionally rough back-countrv road. Although the accident occurred about 9 a.m., it was nearly 4 p.m. before Miss Johnston reached the hospital, on account of the difficulties of transport occasioned by the rough state of the road. Just on 9 a.m., Miss Johnston called the children into school and as they were gathering she made to return to the house to obtain something. Evidently she slipped on the steps at the school door and fractured her leg above the ankle. Fortunately the schoolroom was located only a few paces from the Tahora station homestead and assistance was quickly at hand. First-aid was rendered by Mrs. W. G. Jerram, assisted by Mrs.-G..Easton, arid under instructions 'by telephone from a Gisborne doctor, Miss Johnston’s leg was placed in splints. She was made as comfortable as possible in the home until the arrival of the St. John Ambulance from town. The injured lady was placed in the ambulance shortly after noon and the journey to Gisborne commenced. Mrs. Jerram accompanied the patient. The ambulance driver reported that for about eight miles he found it necessary to travel in low gear on account of the rough road. Miss Johnston’s condition this morning was reported to be satisfactory.
