REGENT THEATRE

"PAGLIACCI"—TAUBER The curtain opened yesterday on the premiere performance in Gisborne of the first, opera that has been adapted for the talking screen. "Pagliacci" is very well known, and its tuneful melodies are loved all over the world. Richard Tauber has been ideally selected for the lead, and scores a personal triumph in this production. Leoncavallo's beautiful opera provides a musical treat that will long be remembered In Gisborne. Excellent supporting Ceaturettes complete a splendid programme. —"Love on the Run" Comedy— Every theatre-goer will enjoy "Love on the Run," the gay comedy romance which opens on Friday at the Regent Theatre. Following upon their successes in "Forsaking All Others" and "Libelled Lady," Joan Crawford, Clark Gable and Franchot Tone score a further triumph in this, their latest film. The three principals again appear together in gay and romantic mood, and the picture moves swiftly along from one laughter-provoking situation to another. Included in an excellent supporting programme will be a Pete Smith speciality which is of particular interest to all dog lovers, entitled "Wanted a Master.''

MAJESTIC THEATRE PAT O'BRIEN IN "THE GREAT O'MALLEY" AND "TWO HEARTS IN HARMONY" That ever-popular Irish film star, Pat O'Brien, has the title role in "The Great O'Malley," which opened at the Majestic Theatre yesterday. Pat's a policeman this time. He's Officer O'Malley, a tough, hard-boiled policeman who cannot see beyond his rule book until a little crippled girl and a lovelv school teacher humanise him. An excellent film, "Two Hearts in Harmony" (Bernice Claire and George Clirzon) will be the second attraction The film is a novel and exceedingly well-acted picture, and is filled with' very tuneful songs. It is a comedy with a pleasant romantic interest, and a thoroughly entertaining and unusual plot. —Friday: George Formby in "Feather Your Nest" — The box plans are now open for "Feather Your Nest," starring the English comedian, George Formby. This is described as being even funnier than his previous comedies, "No Limit" and "Keep Your Seats, Please." The second feature will be "California Straight Ahead."
