NEW PIG CLUBS

INTEREST ON COAST EXTENSION OF MOVEMENT ORGANISER’S ACCOUNT The East Coast districts insofar as dairying and pig raising are concerned lias shown an active interest in the pig club developmental scheme as recently submitted by the Department of Agriculture. The continuation of the organisation of pig clubs at present being conducted by the supervisor of the Poverty Bay-Bay of Plenty District Pig Council, Mr. D. Beattie, has shown gratifying results, and clubs have been formed in the Hicks Bay, To Araroa, Rangitukia, Tikitiki, Wai-o-matatini, and Whenuakura areas, and other clubs in these areas are in the course of formation. Mr. A. D. Littlejohn, manager of the Ngatiporou dairy factory, Ruatoria, and Mr. J. E. Ormundsen, supervisor for the native development scheme, have shown a keen interest in the movement and have endeavoured in every way possible to help dairy farmers and pig raisers in the initial stages of club formation activities. Rangitukia Activity. Following on a meeting held in Tikitiki with representatives of the farming community of the district and with others of outside districts also present to hear an address on the pig club movement given by Mr. D. Beattie, it was unanimously decided to form a pig club, to be known as the Rangitukia Pig Club, the following expressing their willingness to become members: Messrs. Mac Petiha, G. Nepia, Hotene Raroa, Tipi Kaa, N. Campbell, P. M. Kohere, T. Reihana, N. Green, R. Raroa, H. Raroa, W. Hongi and W. Waikari. Mr. Petiha was elected chairman, and Mr. Kaa secretary and treasurer. The membership was limited to 12, and the subscription fee was fixed at £2. \ The rules as applying to other clubs recently formed in the district were adopted. It was resolved also that the club should affiliate with the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association. The following are members of the selection committee: Messrs. W. Waikari, T. Kaa and H. Raroa. Mr. J. E. Ormundsen, supervisor of native lands development scheme, consented to act as club delegate. After a lengthy discussion, the club decided to purchase a sow of the Tamworth breed, Mr. Beattie being authorised to arrange its purchase through the Department of Agriculture. The committee appointed to govern the club’s affairs is as follows: Messrs Nepia, Waikari, Raroa, Kohere, and the club chairman and secretary ex officio. Tikitiki Club. The personnel of the Tikitiki club is as follows: Messrs. R. Warehu, M. Wanoa, Pat Dewes, P. Pokai, R. Poi estate, A. Kururangi, M. Puturangi, Dave Green, F. Manuel, R. Huruwal, 11. Kopu and Mrs. P. Karaka. Mr. Warehu was elected chairman and Mr. Wanoa secretary-treasurer. Committees selected were: Executive, Messrs. Dewes, Manuel, Mrs. Karaka, Messrs. Huruwai, Pokai and the chairman and secretary; selection committee, Messrs. Dewes, Pokai and Green. Mr, It. Warehu was elected custodian. The membership was fixed at 12. The district supervisor was authorised to arrange for the purchase of a Tamworth sow. The membership fee was fixed at £2. The club also decided to accept the rules as at present governing the other pig clubs in the district. The secretary was authorised to make inquiries concerning the club’s intentions to affiliate with the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association. The club was unanimous in the decision to appoint Mr. J. E. Ormundsen ns the delegate to the district sub-council, and it was suggested that he should co-operate with Mr. A. D. Littlejohn in this respect. Wai-o-matatini Meeting.

Marked interest was displayed by those present at a meeting held in Wai-o-matatini recently to consider the formation of a pig club in that area. Mr. James Hayes occupied the chair, and after an interesting address given by the district organiser, it was unanimously decided to form a club to be known as the Wai-o-lnatatini Pig Club. Mr. Hayes was elected chairman, and Mr. John Walker accepted the position of secretary-treasurer.

The following were enrolled as members: Messrs. W. Waititi, D. Hughes, G. Tamahori, H. Matanuku, W. Mill, N. To Kawa, H. Tuhaka, P. Hacnga, IT. Kani, J. Walker, S. Baker and J. Hayes. The membership limit fixed was 12, and in the event of others being desirous of joining it was decided to assist them in forming another club, several present expressing the possibility of such an event. The sum of £2 was agreed upon as the membership fee. Mr. To Kawa was elected club custodian. Messrs. Matanuku, Waititi, W. Mill and P. Haenga, and also the chairman and secretary were elected a committee to govern the affairs of the club, and those appointed to the selection committee were Messrs. D. Hughes, G. Tamahori and S. Baker. Mr. Littlejohn was unanimously elected to act as club delegate on the district sub-council. The breed selected was the Berkshire, and the selection of a suitable sow was left in the hands ol Messrs. Littlejohn and the district supervisor. The rules controlling other pig clubs in the district were adopted. A hearty vote of thanks by the chairman to the organiser for his assistance and very instructive address on housing, feeding and management, was unanimously endorsed by those present.
