NO CAUSE FOR STRIKE
BACK-TO-WORK ORDER PUBLIC WORKS JOB MINISTER'S ULTIMATUM (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. "An intolerable position has arisen and drastic steps have been necessacy," said the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, to-day, in referring to the strike of 80 men cmployed by the Public Works Department on road construction work at Bruce Bay, South Westland. Mr. Semple said he had sent the men an ultimatum ordering them to return lo the job, and stating that refusal meant dismissal. The Minister said he received news of the strike on Friday, and as the result of his investigations he had satisfied himself that the men had not acted constitutionally within the terms of the public works agreement, and that they had no just cause for striking.
