EMPLOYMENT FOR BOYS

MANY POSITIONS VACANT BASIC WAGE PROBLEM HOPES OF ADJUSTMENT (Special to thn Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. A total of 98 positions, of which 24 were applications from town and 74 from country employers, remained unfilled, according to a report presented to the Auckland Boys' Employment Committee by the secretary, Mr. N. G. Cribble, at yesterday's meeting.

Mr. Gribble reported that since the last meeting of the committee 140 boys had been placed in town positions and 47 had gone to employers in the country. The town enrolments numbered 161 and the country enrolments 48 during the same perioo. "As far as farmers are concerned we have had much better luck, because many of the boys have made a change at the most suitable time, the depth of winter," commented Mr. Gribble. The demand from city employers, however, was for boys of 16 and under, and it was impossible to get them.

Representations made recently to the Government regarding youth employment and the effect of the application of the basic wage were replied to on behalf of the actingMinister of Labour, the ■ Hon. P. C. Webb, by the Hon. M. Fagan. He said that a conference was now considering the question of youth apprenticeship and employment in regard to the basic wage, and it was hoped that a satisfactory conclusion would be achieved. In view of the special training now being offered at the Ruakura farm of instruction, the committee decided to approach the Government with the request that correspondence courses covering farm book-keeping and firstaid should be prepared.
